Why Heritage Day?

Alberta Heritage Day, a significant celebration on the first Monday in August, is a tribute to Alberta's rich and diverse cultural heritage. It's a special day for Albertans to acknowledge and rejoice in the contributions of various ethnic communities and indigenous peoples who have left an indelible mark on the province's history and culture.

Heritage Day's origins can be traced back to 1974 when the Alberta government declared the first Monday in August an annual holiday to celebrate the province's multicultural heritage. This decision was influenced by the increasing recognition of the importance of preserving and promoting cultural diversity in Alberta. The day was intended to provide an opportunity for all Albertans to learn about, appreciate, and celebrate the many different cultural groups that contribute to the province's social fabric.

Alberta's identity is deeply rooted in its diverse population, which has been shaped by a long history of immigration. People from all corners of the globe have made Alberta their home, bringing with them their unique customs, traditions, and languages. From the early European settlers to more recent immigrants, Alberta's population is a vibrant mosaic of cultures, enriching the province in countless ways.
